The National Hockey League has unveiled the uniforms for the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets, set to debut during the 2025 NHL Stadium Series. This highly anticipated outdoor game will take place on March 1, 2025, at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, home to THE Ohio State Buckeyes football team.
As is customary for Stadium Series games, the uniforms feature bold and unconventional designs, offering a fresh take on NHL aesthetics.
Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets’ uniform showcases a red, navy blue, and silver version of the cannon emblem, a staple of their alternate jersey crest since 2010. This time, the cannon steps out of its usual circular frame to stand alone as the jersey’s centerpiece. A new “CBJ” insignia adorns the shoulders, inspired by the unit designation pins worn on military caps. The military theme is further emphasized with chevron sleeve stripes representing rank.
Inside the back collar, the Blue Jackets wordmark and a buckeye leaf pattern pay homage to Ohio’s state tree. The helmets are navy blue with oversized white player numbers on the sides, adding a bold touch.

One standout feature is the captaincy patch, shaped like the state of Ohio. This design recalls the Cleveland Barons, who similarly incorporated state shapes into their uniforms. The overall look is striking and has the potential to transition into the Blue Jackets’ regular rotation—possibly without the oversized helmet numbers.
Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings opted for a clean, classic white sweater with a scripted red “DETROIT” logo across the chest. The script design, reminiscent of collegiate hockey jerseys from Michigan and Michigan State, is also a tribute to Detroit’s automotive heritage. The crest is inspired by automotive insignias, while perforations in the wordmark and player numbers echo the texture of leather upholstery. Debossed speed stripes on the jersey add a nod to racing car aesthetics.
Further automotive-inspired details include a purple depiction of Al the Octopus, the team’s unofficial mascot, on the hem loop label, and the team’s “Hockeytown” motto on the pants. The iconic Red Wings logo appears on the left shoulder, and player names are displayed on red nameplates with white lettering in a classic arched style.

The standout element of this uniform is the helmet. Each side features white wings from the team’s logo, complemented by a single white stripe (dubbed a “racing stripe”) running down the center of the metallic red helmet, which also features a subtle metallic flake finish.
A Stadium Series Tradition
Since its debut in 2014, the NHL Stadium Series has become a marquee event, joining the Winter Classic and the Heritage Classic in the league’s outdoor lineup. The 2025 edition marks the first time the Columbus Blue Jackets will host or participate in an outdoor game, making this a historic moment for the franchise.
